“As part of California’s Ag Vision there is a strategic priority to foster climate-smart, resilient and regenerative food systems,” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. “The Board’s work to define regenerative agriculture, is a further step forward in recognizing the valuable contribution that farmers, ranchers and farmworkers contribute to our economy and working lands.”
Since late in 2022, CDFA and the Board have been in a process to define regenerative agricultural for state policies and programs. The work began with consideration by CDFA’s Environmental Farming Act Science Advisory Panel and has included the establishment of a work group to develop a recommendation to the Board. CDFA has also hosted a series of public listening sessions, conducted tribal outreach and has collected public comment from individuals and organizations. A summary of the work related to the process can be found at https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/RegenerativeAg/
“In defining regenerative agriculture for state policies and programs – we are not aiming to establish a statewide certification program,” said President Don Cameron, California State Board of Food and Agriculture. “There are a number certification programs available for producers. Our work is help inform how the term regenerative agriculture is used within state government to grow opportunities for farmers and ranchers and communities throughout the state.”
The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The Board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials; agricultural representatives; and citizens to discuss current issues and concerns to California agriculture.
