“California continues to lead the way in providing transparency within our food system,” said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. “California farmers and ranchers excel at what they do – providing healthy, safe and nutritious food for our communities. California grown is a standard that we all should celebrate.”
SprayDays California, a statewide restricted material pesticide application notification system, developed by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) is anticipated to launch in late March. The system has been designed with input gathered from extensive public outreach and engagement efforts over a four-year period. SprayDays California will provide the public with timely information in advance of restricted material pesticide applications in production agriculture. The State Board will hear an overview of the SprayDays California from DPR representatives and allow for public comment to the Board on the issue.
Regulations supporting the implementation of SprayDays California have been approved by the Office of Administrative Law; as a result, public comment on this item is limited to the State Board of Food and Agriculture.
In addition to SprayDays California, the State Board will also hear updates related to the California Agricultural Land Equity Task Force. The Task Force, established by California Budget Act of 2022, is developing recommendations to equitably increase access to agricultural land for food production and traditional tribal agricultural uses. The Task Force will update the State Board on the recommendation process.
Invited speakers include: Director Karen Morrison along with Leia Bailey, Joshua Ogawa and Juvenio Guerra, California Department of Pesticide Regulation; Lindsey Carter, California Agricultural Commissioners and Sealers Association (CACASA); Ruthann Anderson, California Association of Pest Control Advisers (CAPCA); Camille Frazier, California Strategic Growth Council, Arima Kozina and Rachael O’Brien, California Department of Food and Agriculture and other invited speakers.
“As growers, we continue to operate under ever-increasing standards and requirements,” said President Don Cameron, California State Board of Food and Agriculture. “Producing food is not easy and it’s a costly endeavor – yet we continue to meet expectations of consumers and buyers. We need to value the agricultural bounty that California provides.”
The California State Board of Food and Agriculture advises the governor and CDFA secretary on agricultural issues and consumer needs. The Board conducts forums that bring together local, state and federal government officials; agricultural representatives; and citizens to discuss current issues and concerns to California agriculture.
